Pizza and Beer, Butterworth Cafe, of course at Butterworth

Of the 3 old school Western Food Joints in Butterworth, Butterworth Café is definitely my favorite place. Why?  (Salad Bowl @ Jalan Chain Ferry, Top Taste @ Taman Inderawasih are the other two, i will get around to reviewing them later)

  • The atmosphere in the Café invoke memories and reminds one of the RAAF days in Butterworth
  • They do one of the better Pizza (thin crust) in Penang
  • Most important is the obliging and helpful Owner

My Meal when ever I drop by in this Aircondition cafe will be a Margarita Pizza and a couple of beers,  However that not all what they serve,  Currently they have a do it your self pizza counter, as well as the regular chicken chops and others Malaysianise Western Food.

The Tiramisu is definitely the better ones in Butterworth,  so is the Mushroom Soup, home made goodness full of mushroom  not the canned verity that most serve and Garlic Bread are our favorites here.

Back to the Pizza :  All the pizzas is bake lovingly on your order, so it will take some time,  best if you order some mushroom soup munch on the garlic bread while you wait.  Pizza is serve on a wooden chopping board, order a verity and share.   The Perfect accompaniment for Pizza,  Tabasco Sauce is serve in 2 verities.  Mild Green and Hot Red

How it works :  To mitigate a large staffing requirement, Butterworth Café practice a self ordering system,  You will be given a clipboard, with the menu, as soon as you sit down, all you need to do is to write how many of each.   Hand it over to your serve and your drinks and food will be arriving soon.  Cutleries with quaint salt and pepper shakers are on your table.

Location  :  Butterworth café is actually located a distance from Butterworth Old Town,  along the Main Road heading towards the Butterworth Air Base at Telok Air Tawar.   You can Waze there, or for those travelling with out GPS, take the Main Road (Jalan Bagan Luar) out of Butterworth old town heading up North, Passing by Pantai Bersih, and just after that u will see Butterworth Café on your right  (see Map Provided Note :  My Map is facing south upwards)   There is a small car park at the Café compound.

Kudos to the Owner, genuinely Obliging and Helpful, best affordable western dining experience …….

Chu Cha @ Old Market Food Court, Butterworth

How did old Market Food Court get it name?  Well not surprisingly Old Market Food Court was previously Jalan New Ferry Wet Market.   Once the Market was transferred to Heng Choon Thian Rd, near Butterworth Police Station, the Market was basically left disuse till recently it was turn into a food court.

Chu Cha is basically a verity of food cook to order ie a small “Restaurant” in a food court.  The Chu Cha stall here IMHO is one of the better ones around with some interesting dashers.

One of the Dish we have is Otak Otak Steam Prawns,  Otak Otak is a Spicy Egg Pudding usually with Fish, however we took the prawns option.  Delicious, Best Dish of the Day!

Other then that we had, Vegetable soup, Fish Curry, Claypot Tauhu, Kang Kong Belachan, Oyster Sauce Braised Chicken.   Sorry the pictures turn out shaky, so i did not include them

No Name Shack, Loh Mee

Butterworth still have a number of No Name Shack Places, which at the first glace would tell you why bother to eat there.  How wrong can one be?

When you really think about it,  most of this no name shack are olden days eateries started from scratch, that has survive the test of time, and competition, basically they have not bother to modenise, that all.  Why  that the questions? the Next generation not wishing to take over is one of them,  F&B is a tough, very tough line.  Frankly some Food Eateries have been spoiled due o the next generation zeal for changes.

This No Name Shack serve up a Delicious Loh Mee, for Saturday and Sunday Only weekly and at times may be close for Months at a time.  For information is manned by a old couple with another old man handling the drinks.

Location :  As U drive up Jalan New Ferry from the Maybank Junction, you will see a row of few shacks on the left of the road,  right at the end of that row of shacks at the Alley is this Mini Kopi Tiam that open up weekend and morning only to serve one of the Better Loh Mee in Penang.   (if you pass a 2nd hand car place / car wash) you have overshoot already)

As with Butterworth a Bottle of Vinegar is on the table for you to adjust the taste.  Adds on are available for you to customise your loh mee.

I have to say this,  Try this place out, while you can

Nasi Lemak Bungkus

Nasi Lemak from a Kuih Stall in front of Food Court 188, Sungai Bakap which have a decent Hokkian Mee (Link)

There a Kuih stall in front of Food Court 188,  crowded with villagers  like bees to honey, so I decided to hop over to take a look see before my Hokkian Mee arrive (Link here).  Pick up a small packet of Malaysian Favorite Breakfast  Nasi Lemak, just to try it out.

It was practically the last packet at 8.30am.  It came loaded with sambal and salted fish.  Verdict:  Value for money and good.  Wish I am around this area more often at this time!

Of a interesting note is along Jalan Badak Mati part of Sungai Bakap Town / Village are old day chinese style wodden houses.

Hokkian Mee @ Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

Hokkian Mee Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

Hidden in a corner of Sungai Bakap Village,  near a Temple along Jalan Badak Mati, is a Morning Breakfast only Food Court, that has a number of food stalls.

Stumble across this place one early morning hunting for food while taking the back roads (which is where the food places are) while down south.  Food Court 188 is a surprisingly big Kopi Tiam / Food Court with a big carpark that just basically open in the early morning till around 11am.  .

Yam Rice with Pork spare parts seems to be popular, however I had the Hokkian Mee, which was surprisingly good.  Simple but good, sticking with the traditional accompaniment without other add ons!

Love to find places just like this.

You can also hop over the road to this roadside kuih stall for kuih and / or Nasi Lemak  (Link)

Taman Inderawasih - Hakka Mee & Chinese Nasi Lemak Bungkus

This is the Place for Hakka Mee for Butterworth Folks, however Taman Inderawasih is actually just accross the Prai River from Butterworth Proper.  Hakka Mee is a not so well know Hawker Food, I see it as a early Want Tan Mee,  ie with out the black sauce, wan tan, char siew, but with a topping of Mince Pork

Xin Fung Kopi Tiam is a busy bustling kopitaim, with many verity of Chinese Hawker food to choose from,  A local recommended, The Hakka Mee, and  the Nasi Lemak Bungkus Chinese Style @ the Kuih stall was my selection.

The Kopi tiam is open for Breakfast and Lunch, however most stalls open after 7.30pm,  A bit late for my regular work day breakfast.  When you sit down, the kopi tiam staff will ask for your drink order, key it into Tablet and ask your payment,  Drinks will arrive shortly

Penang Chendol

The most famous Penang Chendol stall, is a particular stall Off Penang Road (Jalan Keng Kwee), the other stall does not get the tsunami of customers, this popular one does, that is if you do not mind waiting in line (which on the wrong day can be more then 50 customers – like ants heading towards sugar ), and eating your chendol standing up, inches form motorbikes , car rushing by, to savory the “real! “ ambiance.

Me,  I am more in to creature comfort, safety, and convenience.  I recommend this place, a branch of the original, at Atrium A, Prangin Mall,  Just 200 meters away.

At time you will be able to order add on,  eg Durian etc to be place in the chendol

At Atrium A, just located Subway Sandwich, & then walk behind, This little Kiosk, it’s much safer, convenient parking, air con, less q, though slightly higher in price, and just as good.

Oh Yes,  Chendol is basically Pandan (Screwpine) flavored rice "worms" jelly drown in palm sugar, coconut milk and shaven ice, some stall may have additional items like red bean, sago pearls etc .....

Photos of Penang Ferry

Penang Ferry is currently the shortest way to access to Penang Island from Butterworth by,  It’s the preferred way for those taking the Express Bus from Butterworth Sentral and via Train at the KTM Station.

The Iconic Penang Ferry with another Icon in the Background,  Penang Komtar!

Connecting Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda (George Town) to Pengkalan Sultan Abdul Halim in Butterworth. The Journey is approx. 3.2 kilometers,  Many tourist will take the short ride over to experience this unique mode of transportation.

Ferry at Butterworth Terminal.

For Vehicles,  one can take either of the Penang Bridge,  however the closest distance is again Via the Ferry.  However due to the frequency of the ferry,  Journey time may actually be longer.

The current Penang Ferry, a Double Decker, Vehicular / Passenger Hybrid, is one of the famous Icon of Penang,  Instantly recognizable,  Vehicles  utilise the bottom and the top deck on a roll on / roll off concept while passenger are house on the top deck.  Originally the ferry was painted in a Betel Nut Orange Colour.

Car Rolling In, Upper Deck

All this is believed to be started around 1920 by a private firm, making this the oldest ferry service in Malaysia.   however it is currently operated by the Penang Port and is due to be taken over by the company that owns and operate Rapid Penang Bus Service and rumors says will be Rename as RapidFerry.  Hopefully the Ferry Services will get much better and the wait time shorter, while maintaining the same charges.

Panoramic Shot of the Ferry Interior Upper Deck

Currently if operates from 6am till Midnight daily, Current Charges (July 2017) are  RM1.20 for Adults, RM0.60 child,  you only pay at Butterworth side.  Moto vehicles From RM7.70 (Car)

ND Nasi Kandar.

Was Nasi Kandar created in Penang?  Originally is was sold by sellers who use sticks to carry baskets of food all around town, so actually Nasi Kandar stand for carried rice........ so the story goes ........

What ever the story goes, Nasi Kandar is a "Addictive" dish of rice with curry, for most the rice must be flooded with curry and let it "soak" in to impart flavor. So Tapau or to Pack will be a good option.

Some Nasi Kandar stalls have a following,  the Famous Line Clear Nasi Kandar (lane at Penang Road) is one of them, and the Nasi Kandar Beratur (meaning line up)next to the Masjid Kapitan Keling,  which open late at night (11pm) is another one.  Please note,  you do have to line up, may be up to a hour or more.

Well what about the folks in Butterworth?  Well they also have a Nasi Kandar Beratur as well, which also opens 11pm,  Its call Nasi Kandar Pokok Kepetang ....   So would you fancy lining up for at least 30 min?  Not Me.  So I get my "fix" at another nasi kandar just a few feet away.

ND Nasi Kandar opens earlier at around 7pm,  Located just beside OUB Bank or opposite TM Point Building, its has a Open Air Stall ambiance,  with table and chairs along OUB walk way, and roadside car park.  Drive along Jalan Bagan Luar till after the Padang and when you see OUB bank turn in.

Food Choices are as normal, and the food is at par with other stalls, and you don't have to wait much ......

Oh yes. for those who won't mind waiting,  Nasi Kandar Pokok Kepetang is at the same location,  opens at 11pm.

Most Famous Loh Mee in Butterworth

Going through Blogs when i started staying in Butterworth, i found out that Ah Khoon Loh Mee is one of the Famous old school food available.

Well, to my Penang Island Taste buds, 1.  Yes its good,  2  Its serve differently.

Lucky Restaurant / Food Court is the location for Ah Khoon Loh Mee:  is a open food court attached to a corner abandon shop,  This coffeeshop open from Morning to Night, however offer different food according to time.  Ah Khoon Loh Mee is available for Breakfast and Lunch.

Ah Khoon, Loh Mee. differs from those on the Island by having a bottle of black viniger and chill on the table.  Other then that, the ingredients are slightly different, as they use chunks of pork meat.  (Note Hokkian mee not avaliable)  One can customize the ingredients like braised pork leg, or add on items in small bowls  Do watch out though,  the price can shoot up!

Do be prepared to wait, the Kopi Tiam can be full of customers waiting for Loh Mee, and Loh Mee only.

Location :  Butterworth Town Center, Oppo TM Point Building  (or OUB bank) along Jalan Bagan Luar at Lucky Restaurant (Corner shop)

Parking can be a problem, however can be found.

Nasi Lemak ! - Sri Bandar Market Food Court ! Butterworth

Nasi Lemak! Malaysian Breakfast of Choice for many, and Malaysian National Dish! Usually prepared in Packets with fix ingredients, there are those who like to upgrade and to custom the ingredients to go with the nasi lemak, To cater for these, there are many stalls that cook lauk pauk for you to add on.

One of my current favorites, is this Humble stall at Sri Bandar Market,  They open early, very early, have a reasonable selection of tasty choice of sambals and other items in tiffin carriers and most important affordable in the current economic environment.  Total will all add on rarely exceed RM4/- unless you go way overboard!

My usual Small rice, a vege, cucumber, ikan belis, and sotong sambal usually cost me around RM2.50/-

Sri Bandar Market Food Court Off Jln Heng Choon Thien, Butterworth
