Food Truck Nasi Kandar

Limited Verities but Tasty

I have notice this lone Nasi Kandar Food Truck (Jammilah Dalcha Corner)  park in a quiet corner, very near the TM Building, right in the Middle of Butterworth, Next to Public Mutual / Indian Barber along Jalan Bagan Luar for a few months.

They offer Alfresco Dinning just like the More famous Nasi Kandar Stalls just opposite the road at UOB Bank, very similar food, but with much lesser varieties, however they have Sambal Nyok (a coconut base sambal that use to be serve with Nasi Kandar but now very hard to find, and achar)

Sambal Nyok hidden Away for customers in the know!

This in my opinion will make this Food Truck Nasi Kandar my first choice.  Pricing is similar with the others, and the limited verities of food is tasty, no need for me to go running around for soya sauce.  To cap it off, the boss is very friendly and helpful.

My Dinner with the Acar

They claim to be open from 6pm till 3am Daily, (Note:  Opening hours and days are a bit irregular)  Before or After having your meal here one can also walk along the Butterworth Art Walk to view the Street Art which is behind the Public Mutual Building.

Best Goreng Pisang in Penang

Best Goreng Pisang in Penang.

For the Best Banana Fritters in Penang, Head towards this humble food truck, at the corner of Jalan Tanjung Bungah / Jalan Chee Seng  (landmark: the junction after Maybank as you are heading toward Batu Ferringhi)  -  What use to be the Old Bus Stop of Tangung Bungah Village 40 years back (coord in map)

Beside Banana Fritters there is the other usual items like sweet potato, yam and other items in season.  Unfortunately for us, today at 3pm the Goreng Pisang was sold out, but we loaded up on other items.

What I like about this place is that they give you the whole banana, not like other shops where the banana is slice thinly.

Map to location with GPS Coord is below

Chung Seng Tim Sum, Chai Leng Park

Our Selection of Tim Sum for the Breakfast

Update : Have Close Down

Chung Seng Tim Sum at Chai Leng Park, Perai is one of the latest addition to the many F&B eateries in the area.  House in part of an old cinema, which was formerly operating as a Chinese Restaurant, under new management its now open for Breakfast at a Tim Sum Air Conditioned Restaurant, as well as offering other Street Food for lunch & dinner,

Some individual photos of the Tim Sum we had.

The set up here is nice, bright, clean, tidy, and air conditioned, in what use to be the foyer of the Cinema.  It’s Well Set up & organised with the Tim Sum Displayed in Food Steaming Table / Warmer at the side for your selection.

Many Verities of Steam and Fried Tim Sum are available, its impossible for you to try all of it out in one day though we certainly tried.  There are some parking lots right in front, other then that street parking.

Price wise its comparable with other Air condition Tim Sum place in the Area.  Location Map, Address are in the Photo Below

Verdict :  Not too bad,

Salad Bowl Restaurant, Butterworth

Salad Bowl Restaurant, Butterworth

Is one of the Original Western food restaurant in the area, that use to serve the Australian Air Force Personnel (Beside Butterworth CafĂ© and Richard Top Taste) they also have a good selection of Penang Style Food here, that reflect on their old school origins.  Typically old school western food joints in Penang / Malaysia will dish up a variety of local food as well.

The restaurant set up is very traditional old school western style, dim lightings for a “romantic atmosphere”, which make photography using a smartphone and without flash somewhat difficult, tables are laid with table cloth, western food serve with buns.

What would surprise you will be the restaurant location, right smack in the middle of an isolated industrial area, along the main road out of Butterworth heading towards Perai, which makes parking an easy task. (4623 Jalan Chain Ferry), Especially dinner time.   Their clientele tends to be folks that know of the restaurant already, with very little pass by drop in traffic.

What is supposed to be good here?  From what I understand from various blogs, Prawns Cocktail, Lamb Shank, Chun Peah (Penang Style Deep Fried Spring Roll), Fried Hokkian Mee, Shark Fin Soup and don’t forget their Perfectly Heated Crunchy Bun serve with a Pat of Cut Butter (which most western food joints do not do any more).

Today we ordered the Chun Peah, nice, tasty and crunchy (which I do recommend highly), but sadly was serve with a non traditional tomato sauce, (I would like the traditional Lea and Perrin, mix with mustard sauce),  BBQ Chicken, & Lamb Chop.

What Stood out most of the time we have our meals here is that the sauce used are not watered down, the meat is season and char grilled properly, and the accompaniments are the traditional Malaysian green peas, corn and carrot mix, pickle vegetables, slice grilled pineapple and French fries.  Most important properly season.  Tere is no need for the bottle of Ketchup / Chili or even adding in Salt & Pepper, which I unfortunately have to do most of the time.

Price wise, damage is not too bad, What I would consider Mid Range / Affordable / Appropriate for such a Air-condition Restaurant .  At approx. RM25 for Chicken and RM30 plus for Lamb, the portion given is of good size, definitely value for money.

Service wise,  let not go in to this as people have different expectations, what is perfectly adequate for me at this time and age, is completely unacceptable for another person.  What I have to say is the food items order arrived within my expectation.

Sinn Tatt Food Center, Raja Uda Butterworth

Sinn Tatt Food Center is a collection of chinese roadside hawker stalls, house under a roof at the side of Jalan Raja Uda (North Bound). The Stalls will start to open from the afternoon till night.

I call it a food center, not a food court as the way it is organised, into a few groups, with their own opening times, seating area, and seemingly "walled" off from the other groups.

I do like the Char Koey Teow, (that opens from around 2pm till around 8pm or Sold off) here, which is one of the 3 stalls around (the other open later), Poach Chicken with Rice or Koey Teow is another popular stall from 4pm and a recent find is the Poh Pieh, (Not Fried Penang Spring Rolls) which usually have a que.  This Stall opens after 7pm .   Other Stalls offering a verity of Penang Favorites can be found.  As they take turns for their Off Day, you can be sure there will be stalls open dail here.

Fried Dough / Ham Chim Peng stall.  (Opens from 2pm)

This Collections of Food Stall fronts a row of Shops, which opens at the same time,  so beside eating one can also do some shopping as well as some sightseeing.

Fried Koey Kak Stall in Action

Aquarium Shop just beside the Food Center

Located right at the back is the "Newly" built Goddess of Mercy Temple, Raja Uda, Butterworth. so do drop by and walk around this beautifully lit up tourist site.

You can WAZE your self here as Sinn Tatt Food Garden is just beside Mr DIY, Raja Uda,  I would recommend that you park along the side roads near the Temple / Behind Mr DIY shop.

The Food Hawkers of Apollo Market.

The most popular among all the Markets at Butterworth, is the infamous Apollo Market along Jln Raja Uda, despite it being un-organised, cluttered, messy, and semi "Open Air".  This Market certainly have a character of its own.

There is the Sri Uda Market, Huge Bagan Ajam Market, Taman Bagan Market, Sri Bandar Market all around Butterworth town to cater for the population, but its to the Apollo Market if you want to find every thing in one place and to enjoy the shopping with a "festive" atmosphere.

Besides this usual vegetables, fish & meat,  there also a huge collection of Street Food as Street Peddlers of a large variety of useful and not so useful day to day requirements, among the center market area, the resounding shop house, and the terrace & double story house that spread out a few hundred of meters.

Many tasty food can be found here, some hawkers so busy that one have to line up for some time like this we kok seller (link here) (freshly made and deep fried right infront of you).  some you can enjoy it there at the prepared open air tables, kopi tiams or the central food court and some you can packed for your meals later own.

this pre Chinese New Year Season,  extra traders set up shop, selling Chinese New Year Necessities, such as apparels, decorative items.

Parking can be obtain along the many side roads, but do go early, as there are limited places avail.  Opens from 7am onwards and wind down from 10am onwards.

Who Bryan Restaurant, Teras Jaya, Off Raja Uda Butterworth

 Pork Burger

Who Bryan was setup a few years back, as a western food, & drinking outlet at Teras Jaya Commercial / Industrial area, off Jalan Raja Uda.  (Around Econsave Raja Uda - see map for the coordinates and exact location) .

From what i understand, they had a few outlets, Penang Road, and in Ayer Itam @ Four Season,  but when i drive around i did not notice them.

Cheese Scallops

The food at this outlet, tend to lean towards the "New type" of Western food where presentation outweigh the importance of "tasty" food.  Having said that 3 years ago they use to have a very extensive menu but has revised it down, however food here is presented like art pieces, but with less "gadgets".

Atmosphere in this place has the “watering hole” outlet atmosphere, their "outside the restaurant" terrace table (smoking – non aircon) is dark, in the restaurant proper itself, the table top were lit up, while the surrounding is quite dim.

It’s was a quite night when we drop by for dinner, at 7.30pm practically the only customers when we entered,  We ordered the Chezy Chicken, the Pork Burger and to share we had the Cheese Scallop.  Presentation was as i said look like art
Chezy Chicken

Service was attentive and fast.(we were the only table after all)  We have no comments on their food other then my "usual" complaint that is  Bland, due to my taste buds. Salt. Pepper and Tabasco Sauce was requested for and received, nor was it outstanding in terms of taste. Food pricing is pretty reasonable comparing to other restaurant of similar classs, however portion was also a tad smaller.    RM18/- for the chicken,  Pork Burger was RM16.  I do miss their cake especially the durian cake as sadly no cakes was available on this day (None was displayed)

Parking is available around,  (Street Parking)    Address Below,   Map with Coord Below
