I call this the Hunted House,  

Disuse "Building" turn into a beautiful Arena using Recycle Materials and Lightings

The 3^rd Edition of the Butterworth Fringe Festival (2017) is a offshoot of George Town Festival that is held in conjunction with, over a 2 day week end 12^th & 13^th Aug 2017 in Butterworth Jln Jeti Lama was an exciting affair, Unfortunately the incremental Weather after 730pm prevented more people from joining in.

Opening event at Main Stage

A good number of International & Local Stage & Street Performance, Malay Food Trucks from as far away as Jitra Kedah, Local Book Exhibition, Local Art & Crafts among others.  While some of the acts are from GTF, the various street performance are specially brought in just for BFF.  (correct me if I am wrong)

This year GTF / BFF attracted some controversial comments, with claims Lack of local participation,  Mr Joe Sidek the Organizer (for the past 8 Years) have refuted such comments by listing out the various local participation. 

 Mr Joe Sidek is everywhere  a pocket dynamo!

Top Eats at Butterworth as at 2017 June

This is a list & link to what my taste buds say IMHO is the best available food in Butterworth,& the Neighborhood as at June 2017.

Having said that there are still many place i have not been to yet, or have not blog about even after 3 years in Butterworth ;( so opinions may differ.

Further this list has been curated with reference to good food  especially flavour however hygiene, services, convenience ie place that only open at a specific day / uncertain timing, easy parking ..... will play a part in my recommendations

Zi Wei Yuan Steam Boat , Location at the North End of Jalan Raja Uda Butterworth (Link) 
Why :  Freshness of Food, Consistency, Efficient Service, own enclose & guarded parking and the Best Soup around.

Disclaimer :  I have not been to much restaurants in Butterworth, however Chou Zhou tick all the right spot at my check list.
Why :  Food Consistency,  Friendly Service, Affordable Price, Parking Ok, Card Accepted.

Chinese Restaurant (Non Air Condition - Kopi Tiam Style)

Why:  Home cooking at its best,  Plenty of Parking in Evening!  Open Lunch and Dinner  Note :  Close Early

Why:  Good Verity,  Freshness ,  Also all competitors in Butterworth close shop, they can only survive in Prai

Why: The Original Famous Food in Butterworth,  Heard of this long long time back, and keeping to it humble beginnings,  Relocated to  Large Airy Food court that was Actually a Old Market!,  Ambiance, Plenty of seating no matter how pack,  Parking Similar,  Big Parking.Space

Why :  Friendly Owner,  Attentive to children! With Special Settings,  Ambiance !

Why :  Largest Parking Lot !  Largest Verity of Food,  Lots of Tables,  WR is the largest!  While the food here may not be the best,  Its at par with most places, there for convenient.  Mutton Satay is good here

Chai Leng Park Eats

Chai Leng Park is a "new modern" township in Perai / Prai just adjacent to Butterworth town,  It house a large wet market, a commercial area with a good number of shops, Pearl View Hotel, and a numerous private houses.  There are many kopi tiams, food courts and restaurant.

Parking is relatively congested, however if you dont mind walking legal parking is available

Raja Uda Eats

Steam Boat using Charcoal Fire 

Jalan Raja Uda is the commercial hub of Butterworth, it is also Butterworth China Town, and also Butterworth Food Street.   all 4.4km of it of glorious food,  from shinny cafes predominantly in the southern part (Pusat Perniagaan Raja Uda) and Teras Jaya, to the Food Court / Kopi Tiam / Seafood Restaurant located at the Northern Sections of the Road , Inter space all along there will be road side
shacks offering street food!

9 God Emperor Temple Raja Uda

The 2 main Landmark is Apollo Market,  Butterworth principle market, is located at the northern end of this road near the 9 God Emperor Temple,  all house in make shift stalls, offering daily food stuffs, street food and other stuffs.  During Chinese New Year Hundreds of Red Lenten's will be providing a suitable ambiance.  There are smaller Temples and Large Street art along this road.

Historically Raja Uda is a notorious area, where one would think three times before you enter.  Now its notorious for its traffic jams!  

Food that I would recommend in this area include the following

Guardian Food Court,  (Link) location south end, off the main road, one of the smaller food court, open the whole day, will be lively at night with good Bak Kut Teh, Roast Meat Rice, Tim Sum.

Loh Mee

Ah Kok Hock Kein Mee  (Link),  Butterworth Famous Hockian Mee, now in their own hyginic shop, Love their Braised Chicken Feet Here,  Open Breakfast and Lunch

Yam Dumplings 

Yam Dumplings, Street Stall @ Apollo Market  (link)  so popular you must wait ..........  Morning only

Char Koey Teow @ Apollo Market (Link)  Not too bad,  tuck in side the kopi tiam on right of Market Breakfast

Best Steam Boat in Penang (Link)   Zi Wei Yuan, So good that it converted me from hating steam boat to having steamboat weekly! Dinner only
