Curry Mee @ Yang Way Kopi Tiam, Chai Leng Park

Curry Mee @ Yang Way Kopi Tiam, Chai Leng Park, Seberang Prai

An acquaintance mention that the Curry Mee at Yang Way Kopi Tiam, does not loose out to the Famous Butterworth Curry Mee at Old Market Food court. So one fine Sunday morning we decided a change of Breakfast Venue will do us some good.

Yang Way Kopi Tiam is located near the Chai Leng Park Market, together with a large collection of eateries, that range from standalone food stalls, food courts, kopitiams, cafes and restaurants.  Parking near the Kopi Tiam can be difficult, so we decided to park a distance away near the Pos Office / Wet Market, which also give us a chance to pick up some delicious roast pork from the Market.

Verdict:  Yes,  the curry mee here definitely does not loose out to the more famous stall at Butterworth,  further we can enjoy the curry mee with the roast pork, and also the Seremban Siew Pau which is imported frozen and baked right at the Kopi Tiam it self.

Location :  Yang Way Kopi Tiam is a corner Kopi Tiam, located around the centre of Leboh Kurau 3, Chai Leng Park the Kopi tiam is open for Breakfast and Lunch.

Tosai @ Jawi, Seberang Prai Selatan

Beyond Butterworth.

If you are in the area, one of the best Tosai (breakfast) can be had, is at this humble kopi tiam (Restaurant 218), next to Econsave, a local Hyper Market located on the federal road 1,  (Butterworth – Ipoh) near the administrative capital of Seberang Jaya Selatan.

It’s easy to find,  just behind the green building, turn in and its right behind,  The coffee shop which open to lunch, also house a (Penang) Hokkian Mee (Soup), a Porriage Stall, and a Chicken Rice all which open from breakfast.  For Lunch there will be a Indian Rice stall as well.

Back to the Tosai Stall, (also have Indian Economy Beehoon, and Nasi Lemak), which is accompanied by the most wonderful Fish curry sauce (No fish serve).  To day I Had some Half Boil eggs as well.  Oh yes do go early,  if late, may be sold out.

Location in the Map attached.  Enjoy.

Bukit Emas Kopi Tiam, Jln Permatang Pauh, Butterworth, Richard Western Food, & Good CKT

Richard Western Food @ Bukit Emas Kopi Tiam
Bukit Emas Kopi Tiam a corner lot kopi tiam that operates for Breakfast and Lunch at the intersection of Jalan Permatang Pauh and Jalan Bagan 1 (Taman Bagan) which offers a good verity of Chinese Kopi Tiam food, such as Duck Leg Noodles, Char Koey Teow, Loh Mee etc, with a large seating area.

What surprising to me is that it also houses a Western Food Stall, which is unusual as most customers will not choose such items for lunch.  This told me that food serve here must be pretty good to attract lunch clientele.

Well I was right,  I had the Chicken Chop,  RM10/-,  it came will all the usual trimmings French fries, Mix vegetable.  Verdict :  Excellent,  We will be back for more,  we only wish they are open at night, as I am usually not in the area during lunch time.

Update :  Also tried the CKT here,  pretty good,  now have more choice.

Jamal Mohd Nasi Kandar, Butterworth

Jamal Mohd Nasi Kandar
There is this Road Side Nasi Kandar Stall, @ Jalan Telekom Butterworth, that open at 11pm and will have that has a que of around 50 person or more lining up on the road for their mid night meal, daily.
I am curious, but definitely not interested enough to line up in the middle of the night, no matter how wonderful the food is.   Finally I found out that in the Morning, Afternoon, and Night they will operate from a shoplot not too far away,  Jamal Mohd Nasi Kandar, and only operate as a street stall late at night.

So I decided to give it a try at their shop which has a much lesser que especially during the day time,   Their shop is located at the intersection of Jalan Kampong Banggali and Jalan Telekom, The food is all laid out as a Street stall in a cart (same cart) outside their shop with seating inside and outside.

As the seating area was a bit warm, I decided to ta pau (takeaway) and also for a chance for the rice to soak up all the curry flavour (traditional way to enjoy nasi kandar), which also result in a not so nice picture you see here.

Verdict :  Not Bad, but would I line up for this in the middle of the Night?

Mak Ee Pastries, Branch at Xin Fen Kopi Tiam

Mak Ee Pastrys is one of those Old Heritage Penang Food that has been revamp and given a updated and Modern Image while retaining the Heritage and the Old Taste  (Kochabe).  One have to say they it have done a pretty good job, in terms of outlets (Kiosk type at Inderawasih, SPT), and taste, if the chicken curry puff i have is any indication.  crisp, aromatic, flavorful, not one of those no taste food you find now a days

Currently if not mistaken they have Curry Puff - Chicken RM2.30, Tuna RM1.90, Portuguese Egg Tart RM2.30 & Chicken Pie RM5.20 (I think)

The Stall for Taman  Inderawasih Perai,  SPT which is just over the Prai River from Butterworth town is hidden behindt Xin Fung Kopi Tiam (Plenty of parking Place Behind) (for Picture of the Kopi Tiam (Here) which is just oppo the SK Taman  Inderawasih, along Medan Kikik  See Map For Reference.  The Kopi tiam is know for the Hakka Noodles   (Note :  Off Jalan Chain Ferry)

Beng Seong Nasi Lemak

Beng Seong Location Map  Here

Nasi Lemak is traditionally a malay dish,  where by the rice is cook with coconut milk, and comes accompanied with a cook sambal (chili), roasted peanuts, and anchovies.  Other accompaniments may be available   Usually serve for breakfast, its now available through out the day.  Malaysians of all races have adopted this dish as their own, and now there are many variations.......

At Beng Seong the version of Nasi Lemak sold here, is the Chinese / Nonya Version, which is typically less sweet, and comes with Sambal Mince Dry Shrimp, there is also a verity of Dishes are available for you to customize your meal (Breakfast), for a more balance, healthier or unhealthier version, to your wish for the day.

My customization is the above is with lady fingers, sambal ikan belis, sambal dry shrimp, and fried egg.  While pictured below is half a boil egg, sambal small prawns, lady finger.

This Kopi Tiam is very near Aroma Hotel, Raja Uda Butterworth .  A Tasty and full meal indeed to start off the day.

Guardian Food Court - Char Koey Teow Stall

Good CKT is easy to find in Penang Island, those that can prepare it the way I like it are a bit more difficult to find, however there are a good number of stalls that knows how to.

However across the Penang Straits, in Seberang Prai even mediocre CKT has their fans, and one will encounter long wait times despite their special operating hours (of course the champ is still Siam road CKT in GT for long ques), and they will usually  decline to customize your plate,

Having going out of my way or even meal times to try out their "outstanding" CKT, i will have to say that its definitely not my loss that they do not "do" it in the style i prefer or at a more reasonable hour that more suitable for me.

Having said that, when encountering a newly open stall at a venue i am use to, or a new kopitiam/ food court. I will always give a them a chance or two, after explaining my requirement, i would either know that they are not knowledgeable enough, or have a can do spirit which leads me to this CKT at Guardian Food Court  Location and Map Here  : which is located off Jalan Raja Uda.

This is a newly open stall, operating at the very front (night only) of a Food court i visit occasionally (due to the low number of stalls, and parking problems).  Originally having decided  to go for the Bak Kut Teh,  I got side track, by the aroma of the CKT, so decided to give it a try.

After explaining my needed, the cook dish up what is considered a "moonlight" style CKT which is acceptable to me.

Verdict : A commendable effort, and will be worth a repeat visit.

Beng Seong Kopi Tiam for Hokkian Mee

When I commented that Ah Kok Hock Kien Mee must be the best Hokkian Mee in Butterworth, a few offered other alternative on what they considered the best.

On of the suggestion was the Hokkien Mee at Beng Seong Kopi Tiam.  Well when some one say good food, and at a convenient location who am i to say no?

Finding Beng Seong Kopi Tiam is easy, its a corner shop, with a tire shop opposite, and the road inbetween this two location leads to Aroma Hotel.   (see Map attached)

There is a number of stalls that open here for breakfast,  the Hokkien Mee Stall is one of them,  there is also Koey Teow Thng, Chinese Cakes, Char Koey Teow, amd Nasi Lemak Chinese Style among others.

Well  the Hokkien Mee is comparable,  where you eat will depends on what you want ......  the CKT here is ok,  the Nasi Lemak looks tempting, and the Chai Kuey  not bad.    Good recommendations

Excellent Char Koey Teow at Excellent Cafe

Excellent Cafe Char Koey Teow

Excellent Cafe Char Koey Teow, is my personal favorite CKT which has been around for 35 plus years.  Excellent Cafe is just before the Ayer Itam Round About, (Landmark Banks!) and a Chinese school.

Back those days, when we spend our school holidays at Grand Pa House this is a must for us, and when my parents were posted back to Penang it became a weekly affair (a 30km round trip), & now its a while indulgence (80km + round trip now as I am staying in Butterworth.)

The Char Koey Teow here come with 2 Big Fresh Prawns per plate, and is fried one plate at a time, for full “wok hei” flavor that hard to replicate by those who mass produce CKT. We use to have to wait 1 hour or more in the 80's and 90's, but now at RM8.50 per plate the wait is around 30 min only, plus the fact that this is abit out of the way for most tourist.

Is this the best Char Koey Teow in town? Most Penangnite have their own favorite. There are many well known stalls like Siam Road the current champion, Lorong Selamat, the red hat aunty, Ah Leng CKT now next to Star View Restaurant, Dato Keramat and at Zoo Road, Ayer Itam at Night, Tiger CKT at Peng Hooi Cafe, Carnavon Street, or Opposite the Pulau Tikus Police Station and to this question there is certainly no answer but just a preference and if the cook is prepared to cook the CKT in your favorite manner such as charcoal fire, using pork lard, or a lining of banana leaf.

Our method, Firey Hot & Spicy with Half cook blood cockles and runny egg.

Most CKT stalls in Penang dish up adequate CKT, that where most penangnite will have their meal, but for tourist from aboard or outstation, it worth it to have one of the famous CKT.

Parking at Excellent Cafe, can be difficult to difficult to find, as there are limited car parking there, I would advice most to seek parking at the Goverment Dental Clinic on the Road heading to Penang Hill at 1o'clock at the Round about. Me, I will park at the some where in the kampong lanes behind.

The CKT is open for Breakfast and Early Lunch till sold out, Beside CKT this Kopi Tiam also have good Roti Canai, Koey Teow Thng (Breakfast & Lunch) and Mamak Noodles (Afternoon).

Getting Here : See Map Provided or Use Waze, Excellent Cafe a POI.

Tokyo Restaurant Wan Tan Mee

Tokyo Restaurant Located at Kampong Banggali is a Popular Chu Cha place for that open for Lunch and Dinner.  Its basically a Kopi Tiam with one Major Stall which is the chu char, and this Wan Tan Mee Stall which operated in the morning.  (I will blog on the Chu Cha when i can get there early enough, as its full house by 7pm)

This Stall was recommended by some Market Acquaintance of my wife.  So one day we drop by,   We have the standard Wan Tan Mee, a wan Tan Soup with some Braise Chicken Feet.

Verdict :  Not really my cup of tea,  Nothing wrong with it,  i just prefer a more robust version, and the Braised Chicken Feet at Ah Kok Hock Kian Mee (Link) have spoiled me for other Chicken Feet, and there other alternative food that i much prefer in Butterworth.

Hor Fun @ Ying Peng Lai Kopi Tiam

Ying Peng Lai Kopi Tiam, is one of those numerous kopi tiams that dots Jalan Raja Uda.  Surprisingly what stood out here is the Sah Hor Fun.

The Sah Hor Fun here is cook perfectly with a nice smoky but not burnt Flavor

This Kopi tiam is located on the same block with Ah Kok Hock Kien Mee Shop (next to Petronas Petrol Station Raja Uda) which account for  the kopi tiam not having a Hokian Mee stall, however they have a number of other stalls like Char Koey Teow, Instant Cook Wan Tan Mee, Chicken Rice, Western Food  etc,  The Kopi Tiam stalls open pretty late around 8am, till end of sales around lunch time.

Another Stall that good is the Wan Tan Mee, Their Wan Tan Dumpling is nice.

Meng Chai Beef Noodles

Meng Chai Beef Noodles is one of the early food establishments in Butterworth,  I will not go in to the full story as its told much better then i can by many people.  What is interesting is this is a chinese establishment still patronize by malays in this days and age for Beef Koey Teow,  Some say the best in Butterworth, and even the whole of penang.

Friends say its good, and i can believe it with the amount of patrons.    Well I do not take beef currently,  what attracted me to this place?  Half Boil eggs with Garlic Toast using French Baguette.
 Yums

One should also pay a visit to this Establishment located at Lorong Bagan Luar 3, (Note - Behind Public Mutual) for its minimalist but interesting ambiance.  From what i understand from the owners,  their original stall was located Near the Cinema, and they purposely wanted to continue operating from the Old Town Area before establishing this outlet.  Meng Chai is one of the Owners Childeren Name.

Baked Pork Buns @ Yang Way Kopi Tiam, Lebuh Kurau 3, Chai Leng Park, Prai.

For more information of Butterworth Town Food click here

While somebody recommended to me Yang Way Kopi Tiam Char Koey Teow,  This person also neglected to inform me that the food at Yang Way in general are quite outstanding for the area.

after many many attempts, ( i either arrive too early or too late for the char koey teow,)  I was finally in the area for a early lunch and manage to have the Char Koey Teow

Yang Way is a Kopi Tiam that is open for Breakfast and Lunch closing around 3pm.  I have eaten here a few time and have since found out what recommended here.

Firstly the Char Koey Teow Stall,  -  Just Not My cup of tea, Back to the search,  Nothing wrong with it, just they do it their style, and the combination of factors.     :(

The Surprising Find here is the Baked Pork Buns, with stuffing of Char Siew & baked to perfection right at the Kopi Tiam,  Yes they operate as a hacker stall with a big oven.  They also have other pastries available, however i notice that almost every one had the bake buns.

Update :  this item is Famous in Seremban, and is know as siew pau,  been informed that this stall has been around for 20 years and the siew pau is imported from Seremban.

this stall is right in front new to the Duck Mee Sua Stall, which is another stall that comes highly recommended.  Now this is not one of my favorite dish, so I will get down to order this item one of this days some time in the future.

Curry Mee, is another item to order here,  this stall is located right at the back  I had this a couple of times when i drop by hunting for CKT.

Roast Meat Rice - Overall it is not too bad, just that it clash with my taste buds,  definitely not my cup of tea

Char Koey Teow, Apollo Market Area

Continuing my hunt for Good Char Koey Teow in Butterworth, while walking around Apollo Market, I walk in to Shiang Thian Kopi Tiam, hunting for food early on morning, and notice this Char Koey Teow, and decided to give it a try.

This Kopi Tiam is located just to the right (as facing) of the Apollo Food Court.  and is to the back of the Old aunty Hokkian Mee (link)

My Opinion A Good Effort,  not the best but listen to your request, definitely will return for more,  The portion is definitely on the large side with similar pricing .

Note :  The Kopi Tiam have change hands, and may be renamed ........

No Name Shack, Loh Mee

Butterworth still have a number of No Name Shack Places, which at the first glace would tell you why bother to eat there.  How wrong can one be?

When you really think about it,  most of this no name shack are olden days eateries started from scratch, that has survive the test of time, and competition, basically they have not bother to modenise, that all.  Why  that the questions? the Next generation not wishing to take over is one of them,  F&B is a tough, very tough line.  Frankly some Food Eateries have been spoiled due o the next generation zeal for changes.

This No Name Shack serve up a Delicious Loh Mee, for Saturday and Sunday Only weekly and at times may be close for Months at a time.  For information is manned by a old couple with another old man handling the drinks.

Location :  As U drive up Jalan New Ferry from the Maybank Junction, you will see a row of few shacks on the left of the road,  right at the end of that row of shacks at the Alley is this Mini Kopi Tiam that open up weekend and morning only to serve one of the Better Loh Mee in Penang.   (if you pass a 2nd hand car place / car wash) you have overshoot already)

As with Butterworth a Bottle of Vinegar is on the table for you to adjust the taste.  Adds on are available for you to customise your loh mee.

I have to say this,  Try this place out, while you can

Hokkian Mee @ Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

For more information of Butterworth Town Food click here

Hokkian Mee Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

Hidden in a corner of Sungai Bakap Village,  near a Temple along Jalan Badak Mati, is a Morning Breakfast only Food Court, that has a number of food stalls.

Stumble across this place one early morning hunting for food while taking the back roads (which is where the food places are) while down south.  Food Court 188 is a surprisingly big Kopi Tiam / Food Court with a big carpark that just basically open in the early morning till around 11am.  .

Yam Rice with Pork spare parts seems to be popular, however I had the Hokkian Mee, which was surprisingly good.  Simple but good, sticking with the traditional accompaniment without other add ons!

Love to find places just like this.

You can also hop over the road to this roadside kuih stall for kuih and / or Nasi Lemak  (Link)
