Uncle Hillside Burger

Uncle Hillside Burger, operate from this truck that park along Jalan Sungai Kelian, Tanjung Bungah just opposite Petron, must be the original "Food Truck" in Penang Island as it dates back from the Late 80's.   Run by a Husband and wife team during the Evening till Midnight.

See that Mound of Fried Onions on the Grill?  That may be enough for 10 orders only.

This Husband and wife Team, dish out one of the best, and possibly the most Unique Burger in Penang,  Each order come loaded with a mount of Fried Onions and Tomato Sauce Only.  If you want chili sauce do inform them.

So popular is this stall is, a wait of 30 minuets of more may be required.  One of their "secrets" is their Burger Patty is custom made for them.

My order of Plain Chicken Burger is at RM5/-

Location :  Corner of Jalan Sungai Kelian @ Petron Station

Dave Deli for Some Roast Chicken

Dave Deli

Dave Deli was my go to place for Roast Chicken, from the day they first open in Midland One Stop at Pulau Tikus Penang, even when Kenny Rogers Roosters, move in there to provided competition, Deve deli was still my first choice.

However it has been many years that I step in to a outlet till very recently.  I have noticed that Deve Deli has open an outlet at the Lower ground Sunway Mall, Seberang Jaya (I call it basement) not too long ago and one day we decided to drop by.

The Front of the outlet open up in to a large dinning area at the back which not many ppl know about.  (come to think about it Winter Warmers has this off set configuration also.

After Placing the order at the order station in Front, and Picking up the cutlery and drinks, (Food is served)  The Roast Chicken arrived fast, followed by our Soup and Spaghetti Carbonara.

The Roast chicken remains the same, Quarter Roast Chicken with gravy served, with Mash Potato and Coleslaw,  comfort food.

Location :  Basement of Sunway Carnival, Seberang Jaya, Seberang Prai

Home Made Wan Tan Mee @ Beng Soon Kopi Tiam

Unique Homemade Wantan Mee

To have some unusual wantan mee, drop by at Beng Soon Kopi Tiam, not too far away from KFC Raja Uda, Butterworth.  Also know as Drawer Wantan Mee by off timers,  the wantan mee is unusual as its thicker therefor more chewie and springy, more like eating the thick flat wantan noodles or the thick noodles use for KL style Hokkien Mee.

My usual order cost RM5/- (2019) and comes with extra Wantan and no charsiew comes loaded with Deep Fried Garlic and Pork fats,  The soup is clear and smooth.

Location:  Off Jalan Raja Uda, Landmark Happy Mart / KFC Raja Uda,  Road from Raja Uda to Aroma Hotel,  GPS location in Map

Sai Toh Lim Koey Teow Thng

Sai Toh Lim

Sai Toh Lim is basically a one dish place,  they dish out very good Koey Teow Soup, serve with Mince Meat, and Fish balls,  Located at a Corner Shop off Jalan Raja Uda, (Landmark Petronas Raja Uda), they also offer a number of Add ons like Roast Pork, Loh Bak (pork rolls) etc,  all which is listed 100% in Mandarin on the Walls of their 2 shoplots.

One can say they are just like 7 Village    (blog post here )  https://butterworthexplorer.blogspot.com/2018/08/7-village-koey-teow-thng.html
offering very similar menu items.

What they differ is their Menu of Add on items, their more down to earth approach, and they still operate one outlet with local staffing.  I do find their (Sai Toh Lim) Koey Teow is “Smoother” and their KTT soup is more flavourful.
We also tried out their Dry Koey Teow, and the following addons, Braised Chicken Feet, Poached Chicken, Loh Bak and Siew Bak (over a few visits)

What good here is  their Koey Teow Soup, I like their Siew Bak (Roast Pork), and while my wife like their loh bak.

Order Taking is prompt, Service is fast and you are to pay (billed) when all the food has been served.  Cutlery, & Condiments are all on your table for your convenience.

Location : Corner Shop, Lorong Ceri 5 Lorong Ceri 7, off Jalan Raja Uda (South) Landmark, Petronas with Subway Outlet  GPS coordinates are at the Map

Ingolf's Kneip - A German Restaurant.

Ingolf’s Kneip – A German Restaurant

Located in the former “Australian” Kampong @ Hillside Tanjung Bungah is Ingolf’s the place in Penang for German Food and German Beer.

We drop by for some traditional eats of Bratwurst with sauerkraut and Pork with cream sauce. The Restaurant is separated in to two. Its bar at the ground floor is “open air” with a with a Air Condition Section upstairs.

Nicely Done. We have a delightful meal here.

Location :  among the only block of shop house, Jalan Sungai Kelian Tanjung Bungah,  See Map for coordinates.

Back to Ah Chong Canteen for some seafood

Back to Ah Chong Canteen (Beach Front, Non Aircon Seafood @ Pantai Bersih Butterworth)

We drop by at Ah Chong Canteen (In Waze as Restaurant Nelayan Ah Chong, our “only” seafood place at Pantai Bersih, Butterworth, for some crabs.

We had crabs done 2 style, With Curry Leafs as well as Baked, as well as Marmite Chicken, Clayport Seafood, Lala, and Kailan, and Chicken Satay for me.  ( I don’t enjoy Seafood)    Total damage around RM250/-

What I really like about this place is,
1)      Simple Unpretentious set up,  May be a bit “rough” for others
2)      The Beautiful view,  best view just before sunset.
3)      The Unpretentious and Simple food, not overly decorated.

Location Map is attached

AKS Restaurant, Old China Town, Alor Setar Kedah

AKS Restaurant, Old China Town, Alor Setar

My last visit to this non aircon “restaurant” (in fact to Alor Setar) was like 15 – 20 years ago.  It was one of our regular makan place (the actual atmosphere is like a Kopi Tiam)
When we walk in, it was like being going back in time.  Every thing is the same, from the tables and chairs, the traditional kitchen to the English speaking (and good English at that) order taker.

We skip my regular order of fish curry, and ordered the Steam Golden Promfret, Medium portion of My usual plate Mix Roast Meats, and Sambal Belachan Kang Kong.

Verdict :  Just like it was years back,  definitely the best Kangkong Belachan I had this past 10 years
Total cost was RM73, which is  Meal was for 3 persons.

pricy for a kopi tiam style restaurant, portion was ample.

Location :  See Map Attached,  Alor Setar Town,  Corner of K371 Persiaran Sultan Abdul Hamid and Jalan Tengku Yaakob,  Near Dataran Tanjung Chali, and Tun Dr Mahathir Birth House.

Aeon Alma Sushi

Aeon Alma- Self Serve Sushi @ Ground Floor

We were at Aeon Alma, Bukit Mertajam, when we decided to have some Sushi at the Self-service counter there.

The Self Serve counter is loaded with various types of Sushi, and well as many other types of Japanese food.  Frankly we were a bit loss, and just grab items that looks familiar to us.
Personally I had the Salmon Sushi.
My Opinion: Not being use to Japanese Food, I would not know how Japanese it is and how its suppose to taste, but it was ok with my taste buds.

Ipoh Style Hor Fun

Cook Ideal Restaurant at Chai Leng Park dish up Poached Chicken with Chicken Rice or Ipoh Style Hor Fun, very similar to May Fong @ Butterworth. See Here

The Restaurant

Menu

Pay Here

In fact the menu is exactly the same, only thing is this restaurant is new, much more hygienic, more pleasant, and professionally run, (Franchise able is what I would say) Opening hours are much longer.

Food taste is about the same.  However having your meals here are more comfortable.  Parking here is a bit more problematic though

New World Park Food Court

Asam Laksa

New World Park Food Court

This big Airy Food Court, houses a good collection of Hawker / Street Food (Penang Chinese, but with a sprinkling of other type of other race) that use to line Swatow Lane, just adjacent to this place.  Some of those hawkers have move on, and have been replaced by others just about as good as, and increasing the verity of food available here.

Mee Goreng

This food court is convenient (with its own car park), more hygienic (then others), centrally located, comfortable which makes it a favourite for locals,  the other part of the complex houses a verity of restaurants and cafĂ©, one of them being the Famous Swatow Lane Ice Kacang / Rojak.

Poh Piah                      Chicken Rice              Otak Otak

This day when we drop by  (Cheng Beng Day for us) we had a verity of food, including Laksa, Mee Rebus, Po Piah, Chicken Rice (One of the New Stall), Otak Otak, and Mua Chi (New).

Price of food here is on the higher side of Hawker / Street Food in Penang.

Mua Chi

Historically New World Park, was an Entertainment City, which fell in to disuse, the hawker stall lining the street out side however thrive and boom, even with the park closure.   Currently New World park is know for its collection of Restaurants and Hawker food.

Curry Mee @ Yang Way Kopi Tiam, Chai Leng Park

Curry Mee @ Yang Way Kopi Tiam, Chai Leng Park, Seberang Prai

An acquaintance mention that the Curry Mee at Yang Way Kopi Tiam, does not loose out to the Famous Butterworth Curry Mee at Old Market Food court. So one fine Sunday morning we decided a change of Breakfast Venue will do us some good.

Yang Way Kopi Tiam is located near the Chai Leng Park Market, together with a large collection of eateries, that range from standalone food stalls, food courts, kopitiams, cafes and restaurants.  Parking near the Kopi Tiam can be difficult, so we decided to park a distance away near the Pos Office / Wet Market, which also give us a chance to pick up some delicious roast pork from the Market.

Verdict:  Yes,  the curry mee here definitely does not loose out to the more famous stall at Butterworth,  further we can enjoy the curry mee with the roast pork, and also the Seremban Siew Pau which is imported frozen and baked right at the Kopi Tiam it self.

Location :  Yang Way Kopi Tiam is a corner Kopi Tiam, located around the centre of Leboh Kurau 3, Chai Leng Park the Kopi tiam is open for Breakfast and Lunch.
