Aeon Alma Sushi

Aeon Alma- Self Serve Sushi @ Ground Floor

We were at Aeon Alma, Bukit Mertajam, when we decided to have some Sushi at the Self-service counter there.

The Self Serve counter is loaded with various types of Sushi, and well as many other types of Japanese food.  Frankly we were a bit loss, and just grab items that looks familiar to us.
Personally I had the Salmon Sushi.
My Opinion: Not being use to Japanese Food, I would not know how Japanese it is and how its suppose to taste, but it was ok with my taste buds.

Tosai @ Jawi, Seberang Prai Selatan

Beyond Butterworth.

If you are in the area, one of the best Tosai (breakfast) can be had, is at this humble kopi tiam (Restaurant 218), next to Econsave, a local Hyper Market located on the federal road 1,  (Butterworth – Ipoh) near the administrative capital of Seberang Jaya Selatan.

It’s easy to find,  just behind the green building, turn in and its right behind,  The coffee shop which open to lunch, also house a (Penang) Hokkian Mee (Soup), a Porriage Stall, and a Chicken Rice all which open from breakfast.  For Lunch there will be a Indian Rice stall as well.

Back to the Tosai Stall, (also have Indian Economy Beehoon, and Nasi Lemak), which is accompanied by the most wonderful Fish curry sauce (No fish serve).  To day I Had some Half Boil eggs as well.  Oh yes do go early,  if late, may be sold out.

Location in the Map attached.  Enjoy.

Sungai Bakap, Roast Duck Village

Roast Duck at Sungai Bakap

Would you want to travel 50km one way for Roast Duck?  Well there are some people do (all the way from the island), and would head for Sungai Bakap (Seberang Prai Selatan) a small laid back village, almost at the border of Penang & Perak fwhich lead to this town having a reputation for their delicious Roast Duck.

At this small village, there are 4 roast duck stalls within 100 meters from each other, all open for lunch.  One of personal Preference is @ Hwa Aik, which is beside Soon Lee which serve Famous Steam Vegetable Dumplings (again there are people that will travel 50km for this,  which will be another blog post)

The Duck rice here is serve “olden” style, rice in a bowl (to be eaten with chopsticks), with pickle chili in a small bottle, chopstick and spoons in its own holder all on the table for you to help yourself.

My usual order will include a combination of the Roast Duck, with the Crispy Roast Pork & the Stuffed Liver Sausage, No doubt the food here is good, there are those similar on the Island, but not in this particular combination.  Total RM11 with one Chinese Tea, Pricy one would say.

From what I was informed all this meat is roasted locally using Coconut Husk, Eco friendly practice to use local items?

Location Map Below, To Waze there key in Sri Ganesh Hindu Temple which is less then 10 meters away, behind the shop

Tim Sum at Nibong Tebal, Penang (Mainland) - Perak Border

Kee Teik Jai Tim Sum is Practically the only choice for Yum Cha Style Tim Sum in Southen Nibong Tebal Area, its located practically right on the Border of Penang and Perak.  While it may be the only place for Tim Sum, the food here is tasty and they are quite innovative as well.  One of their specialty is what i would describe as a Oat coated Sandwich with Pandan Kaya Filling.

Location is a long a row of shop houses,  (see map for coordinates, in a corner shop lot,  along the federal road heading south from Nibong Tebal.  This will be a good stop for early morning travelers seeking a more subtensial bite.

Hup Hoe Shrimp Tau Sa Peah

Tau Sa Peah or Mung Bean Pastry is a traditional cookies that is well know from Him Heang or Ghee Hiang  Bakery (Post Here)   However there are other Bakery that does this cookies as well as the twp big boys but due to location may not be so popular, so in order to stand out they have to be different.

I heard about Hup Hoe Biscuit a few years back,  in particular their Spicy Shrimp Tau Sa Peah,  I personally have a preference of Spicy / Savory over Sweet, so it fits my requirements, so i just drop by as i was in the area.

Shrimp Tau Sa Peah
The filling looks about the same, only light red in colour, but the fragrance is different, and it has a short 5 day shelf life .

Hup Hoe Biscuit also produce other buscuit that not so common now a days,  if you drop by at their Simpang Empat HQ & Bakery its just like stepping into prewar era

3 years after my first visit, the Tau Sa Peah come nicely box,  previously it was just in simple plastic bags

Nasi Lemak Bungkus

Nasi Lemak from a Kuih Stall in front of Food Court 188, Sungai Bakap which have a decent Hokkian Mee (Link)

There a Kuih stall in front of Food Court 188,  crowded with villagers  like bees to honey, so I decided to hop over to take a look see before my Hokkian Mee arrive (Link here).  Pick up a small packet of Malaysian Favorite Breakfast  Nasi Lemak, just to try it out.

It was practically the last packet at 8.30am.  It came loaded with sambal and salted fish.  Verdict:  Value for money and good.  Wish I am around this area more often at this time!

Of a interesting note is along Jalan Badak Mati part of Sungai Bakap Town / Village are old day chinese style wodden houses.

Hokkian Mee @ Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

For more information of Butterworth Town Food click here

Hokkian Mee Food Court 188 Sungai Bakap

Hidden in a corner of Sungai Bakap Village,  near a Temple along Jalan Badak Mati, is a Morning Breakfast only Food Court, that has a number of food stalls.

Stumble across this place one early morning hunting for food while taking the back roads (which is where the food places are) while down south.  Food Court 188 is a surprisingly big Kopi Tiam / Food Court with a big carpark that just basically open in the early morning till around 11am.  .

Yam Rice with Pork spare parts seems to be popular, however I had the Hokkian Mee, which was surprisingly good.  Simple but good, sticking with the traditional accompaniment without other add ons!

Love to find places just like this.

You can also hop over the road to this roadside kuih stall for kuih and / or Nasi Lemak  (Link)

Supper (Pak Chai Kai) at Kuan Nam Kopi Tiam, Chai Leng Park, Prai, Seberang Prai Selatan

This stall at Kuan Nam Kopi Tiam serve one finger licking good chicken, except it is not fried, its poached!

Located at the corner of Leboh Kurau 3 & Jalan Kuran (a stone throw away from Pearl View Hotel) this stall only open from 6pm evenings,  (for Lunch another Chicken Rice Vendor will operate there)  this stall served poach chicken only with beansprouts and choice of flat rice noodles or rice.

Parking is usually "findable", u may have to walk a bit , as in the next lane is Prai "Wai Siek Kai", glutton street.

I rate this stall one of the top 5 in Penang for Poach Chicken.
