Jetty Food Court Char Koey Teow

Jetty Food Court Char Koey Teow

Char Koey Teow @ Jetty Food Court formally know as CF food court.  (49-F Pengkalan Weld)

The Char Koey Teow here is definitely up to Penang Island Standard (Open Lunch till dinner – close Wednesday) and they will custom it to your liking.

I do not patronize this place much as finding a parking here is very difficult, even if you are willing to pay for it, which basically why I took stroll here from the Ferry Terminal after a  Ferry Trip From Butterworth.

They will prepare the Char Koey Teow with Duck Egg when cooking. Frankly while some purist and CKT fans prefer using duck eggs for its “superior aroma”,  I just cannot feel the difference.

Jade Palace a Chinese Restaurant

Jade Palace Chinese Restaurant

Jade Palace is one of these old time Chinese Restaurant that specialise in Wedding Banquets.  They have a number of branches around,  We went to their Choo Plaza HQ? 3rd Floor located along Jalan Abu Siti at George Town just behind Red Rock Hotel.

If you go on the right day and time (ie when there is no Chinese Banquet on going) you can have the entire restaurant to yourself, and do follow the recommendation of the order taker, he/she will ensure you have the best experience.

Braised Pork Hock
Mix Vegetables of Lotus Roots, Baby Corn, French Beans and Celery
Fish Meat Asam Pedas
Braised Homemade Tauhu with Mince Meat

All Superb …..

The "Hidden" Penang Old School Eats

The “Hidden” Penang Old School Eats.

Unknow to most, a “Hidden” Penang Exists, undisturbed by tourist arrivals, and islanders, where many “old school eats” still exists, and thrive, with many sticking to their “original” premises or environments in Traditional Kopi Tiam, while some have upgraded themselves to stand along establishments.

Finding out and trying these “Old School Outlets”, have been a Culinary Adventure for Myself and My Family for the Past 5 Years, and here are 7 Top Old School Iconic Food Establishments in Butterworth” that I have enjoyed dining at.

Click on the Establishment Names for More information, locations etc

Chain Ferry Curry Mee (Also Known as Jln Assumption Curry Mee) - Mention Butterworth food, Even to islanders, they will have heard of this place.  Force to Relocated to “Old Market Food Court” along Jalan New Ferry, they still stick to their old roots, dishing out Delicious “No Frills” curry mee for Breakfast.  Go Early or return disappointed – Breakfast Only

Char Hu (Tokyo Restaurant)

Tokyo Restaurant – An Affordable Chu Cha Home Cook Non Aircon “Restaurant” in old town along Jalan Kampong Banggali. They are Open for Lunch and Dinner, again do go early.

Baked Crabs (Ah Chong Canteen)

Ah Chong Canteen – Beach Front Seafood, You come here to enjoy the view and more importantly the fresh seafood, at affordable prices.  They have expended and neaten up the place, and somehow maintain their Canteen feel.   Lunch and Dinner

Sweet Paradise Tim Sum -  King of Butterworth Tim Sum, best around with same old school Feel.  Open Breakfast and Lunch

Weng Seng – Superb Roast Duck / Meats Stall, with their own premises, Once at night it’s a Cantonese Restaurant, Now they just open for Lunch selling their Roast Meats

Ah Khoon Loh Mee :  Basically just the same as it was year ago,  sticks to its origins, bottle of vinegar and chili is still given at each table for self service, Lots of Add on Options, Open Breakfast till Lunch

“Beach Street” Braised Pork Hock : Originally at Beach Street, Butterworth, near to the Ferry Terminal, they have relocated as the original shop have burnt down.  They are now located at “City Gold Champ” along Jalan Kampong Gajah.

Uncle Hillside Burger

Uncle Hillside Burger, operate from this truck that park along Jalan Sungai Kelian, Tanjung Bungah just opposite Petron, must be the original "Food Truck" in Penang Island as it dates back from the Late 80's.   Run by a Husband and wife team during the Evening till Midnight.

See that Mound of Fried Onions on the Grill?  That may be enough for 10 orders only.

This Husband and wife Team, dish out one of the best, and possibly the most Unique Burger in Penang,  Each order come loaded with a mount of Fried Onions and Tomato Sauce Only.  If you want chili sauce do inform them.

So popular is this stall is, a wait of 30 minuets of more may be required.  One of their "secrets" is their Burger Patty is custom made for them.

My order of Plain Chicken Burger is at RM5/-

Location :  Corner of Jalan Sungai Kelian @ Petron Station

Jalapeno Bombers from Texas Fried Chicken

Texas Fried Chicken has a unique item, its their Jalapeno Bombers

Basically deep fried pickle green chill stuffed with Cheese.

Texas Fried Chicken first outlet in Penang is located at 1st Avenue.  When it first open, it was so jam packed that one has to line up and wait, so “FAST” food became Very “Slow” Food.  Not my cup of tea.

After they start having more outlets the hype died own, and now one can have really Fast Food.  I drop by at their Raja Uda Branch, which is next to the Chinese Primary School.  Parking could be a problem but I was
there early enough.

My Order was for the Bombers and the Chicken Supreme Burger.

This trend of adding cheese or paring cheese with all types of food stuffs continues. By adding some cheese, be they slice, liquid, powder cheese to any items they believe they are creating a new trendy unique food and a best seller.  There are many misses, and very few hits.  Roti Canai with Mozzarella Cheese is a hit, as its very similar to pizza.  In this case of Deep Fried Breaded Pickle Chilies, I do wish this Chilies have a bit more "Punch" to its taste.  For Me its flat and tooo one dimension.  .

Dave Deli for Some Roast Chicken

Dave Deli

Dave Deli was my go to place for Roast Chicken, from the day they first open in Midland One Stop at Pulau Tikus Penang, even when Kenny Rogers Roosters, move in there to provided competition, Deve deli was still my first choice.

However it has been many years that I step in to a outlet till very recently.  I have noticed that Deve Deli has open an outlet at the Lower ground Sunway Mall, Seberang Jaya (I call it basement) not too long ago and one day we decided to drop by.

The Front of the outlet open up in to a large dinning area at the back which not many ppl know about.  (come to think about it Winter Warmers has this off set configuration also.

After Placing the order at the order station in Front, and Picking up the cutlery and drinks, (Food is served)  The Roast Chicken arrived fast, followed by our Soup and Spaghetti Carbonara.

The Roast chicken remains the same, Quarter Roast Chicken with gravy served, with Mash Potato and Coleslaw,  comfort food.

Location :  Basement of Sunway Carnival, Seberang Jaya, Seberang Prai

Home Made Wan Tan Mee @ Beng Soon Kopi Tiam

Unique Homemade Wantan Mee

To have some unusual wantan mee, drop by at Beng Soon Kopi Tiam, not too far away from KFC Raja Uda, Butterworth.  Also know as Drawer Wantan Mee by off timers,  the wantan mee is unusual as its thicker therefor more chewie and springy, more like eating the thick flat wantan noodles or the thick noodles use for KL style Hokkien Mee.

My usual order cost RM5/- (2019) and comes with extra Wantan and no charsiew comes loaded with Deep Fried Garlic and Pork fats,  The soup is clear and smooth.

Location:  Off Jalan Raja Uda, Landmark Happy Mart / KFC Raja Uda,  Road from Raja Uda to Aroma Hotel,  GPS location in Map

Sai Toh Lim Koey Teow Thng

Sai Toh Lim

Sai Toh Lim is basically a one dish place,  they dish out very good Koey Teow Soup, serve with Mince Meat, and Fish balls,  Located at a Corner Shop off Jalan Raja Uda, (Landmark Petronas Raja Uda), they also offer a number of Add ons like Roast Pork, Loh Bak (pork rolls) etc,  all which is listed 100% in Mandarin on the Walls of their 2 shoplots.

One can say they are just like 7 Village    (blog post here )  https://butterworthexplorer.blogspot.com/2018/08/7-village-koey-teow-thng.html
offering very similar menu items.

What they differ is their Menu of Add on items, their more down to earth approach, and they still operate one outlet with local staffing.  I do find their (Sai Toh Lim) Koey Teow is “Smoother” and their KTT soup is more flavourful.
We also tried out their Dry Koey Teow, and the following addons, Braised Chicken Feet, Poached Chicken, Loh Bak and Siew Bak (over a few visits)

What good here is  their Koey Teow Soup, I like their Siew Bak (Roast Pork), and while my wife like their loh bak.

Order Taking is prompt, Service is fast and you are to pay (billed) when all the food has been served.  Cutlery, & Condiments are all on your table for your convenience.

Location : Corner Shop, Lorong Ceri 5 Lorong Ceri 7, off Jalan Raja Uda (South) Landmark, Petronas with Subway Outlet  GPS coordinates are at the Map
