Hup Hoe Shrimp Tau Sa Peah

Tau Sa Peah or Mung Bean Pastry is a traditional cookies that is well know from Him Heang or Ghee Hiang  Bakery (Post Here)   However there are other Bakery that does this cookies as well as the twp big boys but due to location may not be so popular, so in order to stand out they have to be different.

I heard about Hup Hoe Biscuit a few years back,  in particular their Spicy Shrimp Tau Sa Peah,  I personally have a preference of Spicy / Savory over Sweet, so it fits my requirements, so i just drop by as i was in the area.

Tai Lok Mee, KL Style Hokkian Mee in Chai Leng Park

KL Style Fried Hokkien Noodles are not so easy to find up north in Penang, (Noodles come imported from KL) what more a stall that can prepare it well.

So what is KL Hokkien Mee?  The noodles are bigger, fatter, and its cook in lard (Pork fat) oll and comes loaded with crispy pork crutons (Deep Fried Pork Lardons)  and sambal belachan, and lots of dark soya sauce.

Normally this stall at Restaurant Green Planet along the beginning of the one way Wai Seik Kai of Chai Leng Par, Perai (they have their own premises), Leboh Kurau 5 (See Map for coordinates and location) is usually jam pack, however this fine night its was a slow night, which give me a chance to try it out without having to que for some time.

other noodle dish is also avaliable.

Verdict:  Just like its done in KL,  Tasty enough

Beng Seong Nasi Lemak

Beng Seong Location Map  Here

Nasi Lemak is traditionally a malay dish,  where by the rice is cook with coconut milk, and comes accompanied with a cook sambal (chili), roasted peanuts, and anchovies.  Other accompaniments may be available   Usually serve for breakfast, its now available through out the day.  Malaysians of all races have adopted this dish as their own, and now there are many variations.......

At Beng Seong the version of Nasi Lemak sold here, is the Chinese / Nonya Version, which is typically less sweet, and comes with Sambal Mince Dry Shrimp, there is also a verity of Dishes are available for you to customize your meal (Breakfast), for a more balance, healthier or unhealthier version, to your wish for the day.

My customization is the above is with lady fingers, sambal ikan belis, sambal dry shrimp, and fried egg.  While pictured below is half a boil egg, sambal small prawns, lady finger.

This Kopi Tiam is very near Aroma Hotel, Raja Uda Butterworth .  A Tasty and full meal indeed to start off the day.

Chao Feng Jun Restaurant (Northern China Food)

Familiar yet different, that is how i would describe my experience at Chao Feng Jun Restaurant, in just 3 words.  Why,  the food were quite familiar every day Chinese food you find everywhere in malaysia,  noodles, dumplings etc, but its the combination that is different,  we don't usually take noodles & dumplings and the condiments provided are different as well.

Basically I do not read nor understand Mandarin (Sorry, I am one of those that entered Malay School, Speak English at Home so I am a "banana" ), so basically i was lost with the menu, however the menu has pictures and some English translation, so I could only point at the photos and hope its the right food choice.

We ordered a Bowl of Noodles, 5 steam dumplings, 5 fried dumplings and a basket of siew long pau from the order taker,  we then help our self from a side station for our plates, chop sticks, chinese tea (Bottomless),  Condiments provided was Viniger and Chili Flakes.

Verdict :  Food was tasty, Service was fast, They have their own parking or you can park accross the road at the Market / Temple Car Park

Next to Try Some day is their Dry Pork (Belly?) Slice, bacon like that everyone dining else seems to be ordering.....

Best Place for Ikan Bakar, WR Food Court

WR food court houses the largest collection of Hawker Food in Butterworth,  with over 40 stalls, food choice range from the ordinary to the special, and for a stall to survive here,  the food must be good.  I have seen stalls opening and closing within a few months.   This post detail out more of the Hawker stalls available here.

The Ikan Bakar Stall here is easily the very best around, drop by  Grilled to perfection , and from what i understand, one of the pioneer stalls around.

Delicious Hokkian Mee  (that Penang Style Hokkian Mee - Prawn Mee Soup for the non Penang Lang,  Koey Teow Thng, and Roast Meat Rice with Spicy & Sour Vegetable Soup,  this stalls together with the rojak has been around for quite some time.

Fruit Rojak, Mix Crunchy Fruits and Vegetable in a Spicy Savory Prawn Paste Sauce

The Siew Loong Pau, @ RM4 per basket of 4, are small pork soup buns, are rarely found in Hawker Food Courts,  they are more commonly found in higher class tim sum joints due to its complexity and difficulty, in producing this delightful dish.  This stall serve it piping hot!

With plenty of parking space, and large seating capacity, this is the perfect spot to have a nice makan, during the evening, with friends and family.   Please do note most of the food here are with pork.

WR Food court is located at the northern end of Jalan Raja Uda, Near the Apollo Market & the 9 God Emperor Temple.

Earlier Post of WR Food Court here

Ong Lai Kitchen.

Ong Lai Kitchen is a Non Aircon Restaurant that dish out a Hybrid / Malaysian/ Chinese / Thai Cuisine along Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth,  one of their specialty is the Curry Chicken in a Bun,  The bun is a enriched bread like Brioche, and crispy on the outside,  the ratio of curry to the bun is on the small side, but they were kind enough to add additional curry.

other items we have were a Fried Fish Soup, Mix Vegetable & Pork Belly stew with Mui Choy,  No complaints on the taste.

Ong Lai Kitchen is a Corner Shop along the south end of Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth  We were here for Dinner,  Restaurant was full for the Night,  Pricing is Typical for Butterworth

Guardian Food Court - Char Koey Teow Stall

Good CKT is easy to find in Penang Island, those that can prepare it the way I like it are a bit more difficult to find, however there are a good number of stalls that knows how to.

However across the Penang Straits, in Seberang Prai even mediocre CKT has their fans, and one will encounter long wait times despite their special operating hours (of course the champ is still Siam road CKT in GT for long ques), and they will usually  decline to customize your plate,

Having going out of my way or even meal times to try out their "outstanding" CKT, i will have to say that its definitely not my loss that they do not "do" it in the style i prefer or at a more reasonable hour that more suitable for me.

Having said that, when encountering a newly open stall at a venue i am use to, or a new kopitiam/ food court. I will always give a them a chance or two, after explaining my requirement, i would either know that they are not knowledgeable enough, or have a can do spirit which leads me to this CKT at Guardian Food Court  Location and Map Here  : which is located off Jalan Raja Uda.

This is a newly open stall, operating at the very front (night only) of a Food court i visit occasionally (due to the low number of stalls, and parking problems).  Originally having decided  to go for the Bak Kut Teh,  I got side track, by the aroma of the CKT, so decided to give it a try.

After explaining my needed, the cook dish up what is considered a "moonlight" style CKT which is acceptable to me.

Verdict : A commendable effort, and will be worth a repeat visit.

BBQ in Love Cafe

BBQ in Love CafĂ© is a 2 year old plus Korean BBQ Restaurant Located along Jalan Raja Uda, South End (Near Petronas Station), Butterworth. Seberang Prai Utara, and is decorated accordingly to its theme.  During my first visit some 2 years back, the BBQing was done right in from of you on the table,  However on this visit, all the BBQ was done in the Kichen.  Frankly i do prefer it this way.

There 2 type of seating available within the restaurant , Traditional Korean Style seating on a platform with low table or Normal Dinning Tables.

The Menu is extensive, for food and drinks options, with some imported items from Korea.  Being not familiar with Korean food, I took the 4-person set option (RM199), with a few additional items recommended as we are 5 adults, and 4 child.   Damage came up to RM340/- inclusive drinks.

Verdict :  Tasty Food, Friendly Service, will be back for more.  I cannot comment on how accurate the korean food is, as i have basically not tasted such food before,  My comment is the food is nice and well suited for me.

What stood out for me was the Porkribs with Cheese,  Seafood Pancake with Cheese (Looks like a pizza), Mushroom with Cheese, and the Eggplant with Garlic.

Comparing with my previous visit, I have to say that the food has improved, and the dinning experience much more relax and pleasant.

Yean Yean Restaurant, Tanjung Bungah, Penang Island

Yean Yean Restaurant is a open at night only joint in the suburbs of Tanjung Bungah (Taman Concord) just of the Main Road heading towards Tourist Town of Batu Ferrighi.  Open at 5pm till 10pm and close on Wednesday, it usually caters to the residents families, with the occasion influx of Tourists during school holidays.  Note  :  Very near Tenby International School.

Note :  Penang Island Post

Overall dinner was not too expensive with the total bill coming up to RM250 for a total of 6 dish (including fish maw) in this non aircondition, converted terrace house restaurant .  What surprice me is the efficiency, with order taken minutes, no confusion and the 6 dish arrived very fast and within seconds of each other, in a full house environment (we got the last available table for that night)

Total Damage is Below RM250, reasonable in my opinion  as all the dish was large which is more then enough for 10 persons,  Do indicate when ordering the size of dish you want as they tend to go for a larger portion.

Dish to try out next time is fish curry.
