HP 14-BS033TX Laptop Review : Part 1. Purchase, First Impressions, Get Ready for Use.

Part 2 of the Review is here (Link)  - Soft Ware with More to come
Part 3 of Review (Link) - Getting use to computer

Buying the laptop is easy, setting it up and transferring over all the data from the old devise is a chore

Purchase:
After shopping around various Brick and Mortar Store and Internet Shops including HP own on line store, I decided on getting it from one of those huge discount computer stores that offer fair pricing at par with the HP online store, (Not the cheapest) but with 2 very important points that others do not offer

  • No Additional Charges for use of Credit Card
  • Installment Plan ( I went for a 12 months ,zero interest plan)

The Shop I choose, (contact me if you want to know which), has this facilities, and shopping there was a brisk, efficient and friendly, I was like in there for less the 10 minutes before coming out with the devise.

The Laptop: The laptop comes in a box with padding, 2 different type of power cord, (UK and a two pin (I think)) and a power brick which is suppose to be multi voltage capable. HP throw in a Compact Backpack and the Store gave a Umbrella with the purchase.

My Impressions :

Appearance : In spite its plastic constructions, full of ports including a VGA connector, Dvd drive, the laptop is pretty slim thanks to its thin cover / LCD panel, almost like others more expensive metal hybrids in the market, the Matt Jet Black looks beautiful, no finger prints, but there a tendency to pick up some skin oil on its surface.

Construction :
The computer its pretty well made, I feel that its Robust, (does not flex much / for normal use !), the ports well fitted and not too close to each other, the Hinges are not too stiff, and move well and easy, just right in my opinion.

Cons : The indicators lights are at the side, HDD is on the right lower, while the Power is on the left upper, as such you have to go look for them not being visible, not user friendly in my opinion.

Performance : Comparing this i3 with a Atom, it can feel sluggish on start up / opening an app, this may be due to the fact that this laptop use a HDD only, and not a HDD and a SSD of 32gb, starting an app the 2nd time around is fast. Why can't manufacturers add in a SSD to normal laptops? Cost?  Don't think it will cost that much.  - After Starting up performance was adequate.

The Back Pack : looks seriously business like despite its fabric covering, in terms of size it is adequate just for the Laptop with the power brick, cord , and some needed items like pens, cds, cords, etc but if you want a bag where you can bring along more items like some files, books and such, you will have to look for a bigger bag, which is a pity, the bag given looks smart and very suitable. Further more organization compartments are required.

What that can fit in, beside the laptop

Decisions:
OpenOffice 4.1.3, I decided to go with out Microsoft Office for the moment, and infect typing this using Open Office provided which in fact like a old version of MS Office. A try out MS Office is already bundle in. I may decide to get a product key as Open Office seem to be without a reliable spell checker, at least I do not know how to get it to function, dispite checking its help and on the net, some auto corrections seems to work.

HDD:
The 500 gb HDD was partition in to 3 parts Drive C : Programs & Software came to 46gb, that 197gb free for more programs, Drive D : Recovery is 12.7gb size with 1.54 gb free, and a drive E : with 207 GB total.

Software : that came with the laptop include the OpenOffice, Microsoft Office, Chrome, Firefox, CC Clean, Keeper Password Manager etc, as well as a mix of utility application, games and Microsoft and HP Application thrown in as well. (will be trying to uninstall some)

My advice is, first time you are using this, get to a place with decent wifi and have plenty of time, so you can do all the updating that required and go throgh the Get Started App which will turn into the Tips Application after getting internet connection, lucky I noted down all the applications as after running Getting Started, I exited and when I came back it disappeared, but then the Tips App appeared. (do connect to wifi first)

Getting Started (No Not the App)

Signin :
So the store have already configure a local account to sign in with out password, as I have already a Microsoft account, I went to ( Windows Key – Setting – Accounts ) and sign in using my MS Account, which immediately override the local account, (That after I enable the local account password feature)

I then set up another account for other guests to use my lap top (in Account – Family and other Ppl – Other Ppl - (+) Other Ppl, - I dont have this person sign it information (bottom) - add user without microsoft account – (bottom) )

After this its time to check on the updates (Windows Key – Setting – Update) which will show you the updates available and status of the down load, It should auto update, but be prepared to take some time.

To verify your computer is of the spec that you have purchase, is (Windows Key – Setting System - (go to Bottom) About) and if you have a graphic card (mouse over any place with out icon, right click ) you should see your graphic card there. Click on in for further

Next step is to transfer all the data from my old hybrid (approx 114gb to transfer over) which found a home at the E drive .

My suggestion then is to go through the Tips Apps or Get Started

I also have to uninstall Chrome and reinstall it as it claims to be out of date and cannot auto update.

Flash did an auto update. So on to

Upgrading my Computer, Back to a Laptop

Upgrading my Computer, Back to a Laptop

Why. People are not purchasing laptop already.

Connectivity problems, is the reason, I feel a laptop is better for my needs, While my old detachable serve adequately for me, being light weight, at times it hiccups, disconnecting from the keyboard / HDD portion requiring me to detach and reattach, its one usb port no longer functions, if power on button needs fiddling until I leave my device on sleep mode all the time.

So Its back to a big bulky laptop, with a big power brick.  Why they don’t have budget 12-13in screen laptops?  And this time I intend to bum up the CPU to i3

Which Model?

After shopping around Big chains and standalone, it looks like I am going to purchase a HP 14-bs033tx, HP is now ever where in the shop, it’s a basic model, with basic cpu (i3 6006) , and has a basic graphic card (AMD Redeon TM520), HDD 500GB, 14 in Screen (1366x768), 2 Usb port 2.0 1 Usb 3.0, Full Size Key Board, 1 HDMI, 1 VGA, 1RJ-45, weight in at 1.9kg

Most shops is pushing this at RM1799, with some selling at RM1899, Hello Even HP own web is selling at TM1799, however only 2 places have CC installment plans.  Looking up a review on this model is impossible, no reviews at all, so i will be buying blind

Great Wellesley Food Court

Great Wellesley Food Court is a very popular food court located at Chai Leng Park Prai,  Its only open at night. They have their own parking which cost RM2 per entry or you can op to park on the street which is free unless you stumble across a jaga kereta.

Usually they will be packed by around 8pm.  However the turn over is fast, just wait a while and you will secure a table.  You can say that all the hawkers located here are of a better standard then most of others in the Area.

Among the Good stuffs here to my taste buds are the Satay, the Koey Chap, the Oyster omelette.  Duck Meat Koey Teow Thng (first from left) Picture above, the Otak Otak, (Penang Steam Spicy Fish & Egg Custard wrapped in Banana Leaf  (center pic above)).

Above is Loh Bak, and Pork Intestine Porridge

This food court is at the exterior of a old Cinema Theater, which is now converted.  Location :  Corner of Leboh Kurau 3 & Jalan Kurau

Tokyo Restaurant Wan Tan Mee

Tokyo Restaurant Located at Kampong Banggali is a Popular Chu Cha place for that open for Lunch and Dinner.  Its basically a Kopi Tiam with one Major Stall which is the chu char, and this Wan Tan Mee Stall which operated in the morning.  (I will blog on the Chu Cha when i can get there early enough, as its full house by 7pm)

This Stall was recommended by some Market Acquaintance of my wife.  So one day we drop by,   We have the standard Wan Tan Mee, a wan Tan Soup with some Braise Chicken Feet.

Verdict :  Not really my cup of tea,  Nothing wrong with it,  i just prefer a more robust version, and the Braised Chicken Feet at Ah Kok Hock Kian Mee (Link) have spoiled me for other Chicken Feet, and there other alternative food that i much prefer in Butterworth.

Chaw Choon Tim Sum, Raja Uda Butterworth

Chaw Choon Restaurant is a Time Sum Restaurant located off Jalan Raja Uda / Jalan Ong Yee How Junction, is one of the top tim sum place in Butterworth, the only other alternative (in Butterowrth that is) to its HQ Sweet Paradise Tim Sum which is located off Jalan Heng Choon Thean  (Link)

Other good eats in Raja Uda is here link

Chaw Choon Restaurant is the New Shiny Version vs the old laid back, nostalgic atmosphere you find at Sweet Paradise.  Operation wise is similar, with a steam table on the side where all the offerings are laid out, for your selection,  Basically food is self serve, with on occasion visitation by a server carrying a tray of a single type of Tim Sum.  What available here are similar in terms of verity and taste with HQ, however with subtle difference.

Some 3d painting act as decoration,  Please note the crowd here is more than Sweet Paradise, as this location is closer to Butterworth Population, and toward Sri Uda & Apollo Market.

8 items plus Chinese Tea Cost us RM25/-  Pricing is similar.

Land Mark is Hong Leong Bank.  Street Parking is available however traffic can be congested.

How to lower your Vehicle fuel Consumption?

Disclaimer:  the following methods were discovered via reading and have work for me, and my vehicle, it may or may not work for you or your vehicle,  use it at you own risk and at all times obey the traffic rules at all times, drive safe and defensively.

Saving fuel is a major concern for most drivers,  some look for devices and / or fuel additives which may work for some vehicle or some driving skill level.  But frankly speaking the best fuel saver is you leg, common sense and your brain.

If you are looking for a new vehicle, start by looking for an Energy Efficient Vehicle, that match your needs, or that has low fuel consumption, You can check the internet for such information,  Such information change daily with new cars etc so there is no point for me to give you links.

Next  Know Your Current Vehicle.
Read your Vehicle Handbook, Know the service interval and what to be change ( & the specification as well as lower specification of replacements eg Engine Oil can cause high consumption)
Get to Know - What is the Most Fuel Economical Speed and Engine Rev?  For Perodua Alza it is between 60kmph to 80 kmph, approx. 1.5k to 2.1k rev.  This will be somewhere in the sales broucher where they will state the fuel consumption at that speed.

Secondly, Maintain Your Vehicle
Well maintain Vehicle, save fuel, as its operating at its optimum
  •   Tyre Pressure, go for 10% above the recommendation
  •   Tyre Alignment, Balancing, Rotation at least once a year, or 20k
  •   Service per schedule, get quality engine oil & check the engine oil expiry date
  •   Change Spark Plugs 20 K or per schedule according to type

Driving Skills and Style
Skillfull Drivers can “cut” corners resulting in KM save,  Hypermill by coasting on free gear etc. Not all drivers have the skill to do so .What you can do to save fuel
  • Gentle but Brisk Acceleration – Stomping on your accelerator is wasteful,  Imagine an egg between you foot and the pedal, but please do not be too slow to accelerate, I usually go around 2 to 3K rev,  If too slow you can cause traffic jams
  • Anticipation – Drive with an eye to what happening in Front, Anticipate conditions eg coming to a red light,  Let off on the Gas early and coast
  • Defensive Driving -  Drive with an Eye all around you,  avoid sudden Braking
  • Choose Low Traffic Time,  Get up and Move Earlier if Possible,  a 10 min difference can mean 30 Min or more on the road stuck in traffic.
  • Where possible accelerate up to the optimum speed and let go the pedal before reapplying to maintain speed this will let the auto gear go to the highest gear possible.

Others
  • I use Waze to avoid Traffic & Find the Fastest / Shortest Route & Find car parks
  • Use GPS to Go to new places to avoid “hunting” or driving around
  • If you change tyres, do consider the following, Rain Tyre typically do cause higher fuel consumption in exchange for better grip, but please do err for safety
  • Comfort Tyre do cause higher fuel consumption in exchange for a soft ride
  • Switch Off your Engine while waiting
  • RON 97 vs RON 95, Some says RON97 save money,  Well, Paultan Blog have tested it out with mix results, but in terms of RM value, not much difference  see Link 1  See Link 2  For Me i will stick with RON95
  • Plan Your Drive, &  Avoid Congested Areas where possible, eg if you are picking up your children from school, park a bit further away, and walk or it the front of the complex is choke, dont go there.
  • Do Manual Calculation to get your fuel consumption, and keep a record with notes on service. change of tyre pressure, or tyre, new equipment.
  • Lastly but not least is Weight,  all the things you have in the car, like a golf set, that you do not need, take it out,  but dont remove safety equipment or your spare tyre, the more weight you carry the higher the consumption is going to be.  .
A little test using my vehicle fuel computer.

From the above screenshot,  i drove in 3 different manner, all along the same road / or return, 100% highway. obeying all regulations, and safety.

From Left to Right

First An "aggressive" drive, as stated 100% on the highway,  Rev hitting 4k while accelerating, Speed at Max when ever possible (110kmph), air condition setting at 1,  traffic condition :  moderate
Result  5.8lt per /100 lts

Middle : a "Moderate drive, all the above with the following,  Rev : 2.5k,  Speed at 100kmph for most of the distance, air condition setting at 1,  Traffic condition : moderate to heavy,  Result 5.5lt per / 100lts

Cruise:  a "Grandfather" on the road drive.  all the above with the following.  Rev 2K,  Speed at 80kmph Max, air condition setting at 1.  Traffic condition :  Light  Result 4.4lt per / 100 lts .

Sinn Tatt Garden Food Court Char Koey Teow

I think i may have found my Favorite Afternoon (After 3pm) CKT.

Sinn Tatt Garden Food Court is a collection of Food Stalls in a shaded, open air roadside "establishment" that operates in the Afternoon and Evening till Night.  Its get crazy here in the evening and nights, while in the afternoon around 3pm is usually calm and quite with only a few stalls open (of which one of them is the CKT, Curry mee and the Drinks stall, and a rice stall not too far away) Landmark is Mr DIY Shop, Raja Uda on Waze.

Parking  is available behind Mr DIY,  Plenty of Space so please do not follow those that park along the congested Jalan Raja Uda.

So  let see,  Its calm, with seating available, there is plenty of parking, so how the food,  comparing it with the best on the Island, it will rank some where as not too bad,  what good is instruction given are followed (unlike most around the area) and they cook up a decent plate of affordable CKT,

I will be (and have been) back for more Char Koey Teow here.

Hor Fun @ Ying Peng Lai Kopi Tiam

Ying Peng Lai Kopi Tiam, is one of those numerous kopi tiams that dots Jalan Raja Uda.  Surprisingly what stood out here is the Sah Hor Fun.

The Sah Hor Fun here is cook perfectly with a nice smoky but not burnt Flavor

This Kopi tiam is located on the same block with Ah Kok Hock Kien Mee Shop (next to Petronas Petrol Station Raja Uda) which account for  the kopi tiam not having a Hokian Mee stall, however they have a number of other stalls like Char Koey Teow, Instant Cook Wan Tan Mee, Chicken Rice, Western Food  etc,  The Kopi Tiam stalls open pretty late around 8am, till end of sales around lunch time.

Another Stall that good is the Wan Tan Mee, Their Wan Tan Dumpling is nice.

Chapati @ Sri Bandar Market

Just open up a few months back at the Sri Bandar Market Food Court is a new stall that sell Punjabi Chapati.  Being the curious person i am i tried it out, and was hooked.  (More Food Review Here)

With the Chapati one can have a optional choice of a few items to upgrade the meal instead of plain bread,  all with pictures,  but not all are available on a daily basis

so far i have tried their curry chicken, mix vegetable and chick pea curry.  Best so far is Mix Vegetables,  oh yes  the Chapati is nice

Meng Chai Beef Noodles

Meng Chai Beef Noodles is one of the early food establishments in Butterworth,  I will not go in to the full story as its told much better then i can by many people.  What is interesting is this is a chinese establishment still patronize by malays in this days and age for Beef Koey Teow,  Some say the best in Butterworth, and even the whole of penang.

Friends say its good, and i can believe it with the amount of patrons.    Well I do not take beef currently,  what attracted me to this place?  Half Boil eggs with Garlic Toast using French Baguette.
 Yums

One should also pay a visit to this Establishment located at Lorong Bagan Luar 3, (Note - Behind Public Mutual) for its minimalist but interesting ambiance.  From what i understand from the owners,  their original stall was located Near the Cinema, and they purposely wanted to continue operating from the Old Town Area before establishing this outlet.  Meng Chai is one of the Owners Childeren Name.

Alley of Arts - Butterworth Old Town, Off Jalan Bagan Luar

The initial Street Art Push was at Jalan Raja Uda, Big Giant Murals by international artists, all within the Newly Built by Wooley Development.  See Link here.

The Second Phase of Street art in Butterworth is spearheaded by local artists, and in the Old Town Area near the Town Padang.  Art Featured here are mainly historical in Nature.  The Alley where all the art is next to the Lodge Hotel which faces the padang.  I will let the Art do most of the talking.

Right at the Side of Lodge 18 Hotel, and Alliance Bank is the Butterworth Art Alley,  this was phase 1, and the other end is phase 2.

Teik Heng Restaurant - Old School Tim Sum Chai Leng Park

This Sunday i decided to head for Chai Leng Park for some Tim Sum at Teik Heng Restaurant, which is located next to the Chai Leng Park Market.  Though Its a congested commercial area, there is plenty of parking if you do not mind walking.

Our Selection of Tim Sum!  12 plates,
Verdict Pretty Good,  of course there are some hits and misses, but overall we enjoyed all the food,  I do find that the pieces here are on the smaller side
Total for all of this is Below RM40 including Chinese Tea

The Shop is located at Lebuh Kurau 2, hidden by traders setting up shop all around it.  Coord is on top of the Map

Right infront of the Shop is their main display area with a steamer making sure all the tim sum is serve pipeing hot,  You can select your tim sum here, or the staff will bring around trays of goodies.  The Staff here are very friendly. When Paying the bill we were entertained by the Human Talking Calculating Machine.  I just cannot keep up with the speed of prices being said and tally up.  :)

The Shop is surrounded by stalls selling Cloths, fruits and wood amulets and bracelets.  Some of the Wooden amulets are made with Raja Kayu, supposedly with mythical properties.  This wood is very special as it can be identify using a light, which when shine from the back, you will see a red light on the wood surface!  Extremely difficult to be cut as well.

Lamb Brisket

Unusual Dish @ Heritage Locations

The Lamb Brisket Soup is photo shy!  Dark meat with Dark soup do not turn up well.

Lamb Brisket Soup?  What that.  Never heard of it,   That was my first reaction,  Well after trying this unusual dish out i have to give it a thumbs up.  Not Cheep though RM9 per bowl.  But I do feel its value for money, as its choke full of meal, slightly chewy, but oh so tender, slightly gamy and herbal smell.  You can have rice or noodles with it,

Location of stall is right next to the Drinks Dispenser Area  (On right)

Location  Jalan New Ferry,  Old Food Court Market  (Yes the one housing Butterworth Famous Curry Mee, Plenty of Parking   Coord 5.397946 by 100.370054

Mi Band 2 and Mi Fit App Setting up for Better Battery Life - Let's talk Tech

Mi Band 2 & Mi Fit Setting Up for Extended Battery Life  -  Let’s talk tech

Mi Band Up and Running

The Mi Band 2 has already a very good battery life,  however its possible to get even as much as more then 2 months usage per charge if you configure your settings correctly, and to have the functionality you require.  Me being a lazy person, i will usually charge at around 26 to 30 days which with simple setting will be around the 70% mark remaining battery.  So in theory, the Mi Band 2 can last me as much at 3 months.

My usage of Mi Band 2 is to function principally as
  • A Pedometer
  • A Watch
As such Many activities that consume Battery life both for the Mi Band 2 and for My Phone  Redmi Note 3 (Kate) can be scale down.

  • Most Important is Bluetooth, switch on when I want to down load the Mi Band data to phone, usually daily.
  • Display on Mi Band 2, to cycle between, Time > Steps > Heart Rate > Remaining Battery ( You can also display Distance walk n Calories consumed,  I will use the Phone Apps, for this information as I do not set daily targets for those)  You can set this At Profile > Mi Band >  Band Display Settings
All the Choice you can choose to display on Mi Band 2
  • All other Notifications, Setting is at Play, Incoming Call Alert, Alarm, Band Alert (apps alert from phone) and Idle Alert is switch off,  I only use this when I need Discreet (Band vibration) Notifications, Especially Alarm as it does not require Bluetooth.

"Play"

Others
  • You can have 2 types of Time Display Format : Just Time or time slightly smaller with date, day & Month, there will be a little orange tick to show what is selected, make your choice and click ok

Photo Display Time Format Choice
  • You can also set for the Your Phone to auto unlock when near the Band, if the Bluetooth is switch on as well. You will just skip the password verification after you slide your finger to unlock the phone.

How to Pair A New Mi Band 2 after you loose your old one, - Let's talk Tech Mi Band 2

How to pair a New Mi Band 2 after you loose your old one.  – Let’s Talk Tech Mi Band 2

(Photo - Mi Band 2)

There must be 100s of Smart watches and fitness band Brands N Types around, but for me Xiaomi produce a functional fitness pedometer around with a clock, superb battery life though the looks are a bit lacking.

Well to cut the story shot, I drop my Mi Band 2 some where and with a metal strap to boot.  How come?  I found out that if I fasten my Mi Band to my belt, its more accurate,  well I did not strap it on properly.  So a replacement is required.

I decided to purchase through Lelong.com through one of the shops there, and after browsing through Price range from RM92 to RM 160 plus though those come with extra straps, or metal bracelets, leather straps, extra chargers.  I decided to purchase from a particular shop that I have purchase from before  Just for the Std package, RM94.50 per unit, + RM6 for Postage and Paying by Credit card charges all coming up to RM103.75 via Net Pay.  This is somewhat cheaper then the Official Xiaomi Price of RM128

Photo - Mi Band 2 arrival Packages

So I ordered and paid around 9am Day 1, at 2pm Day 2, Item have arrive in my hands. That like 30 hours from ordering to arrival, Excellent Service, Fast, Efficient & Cheaper, I will definitely put tradeshoppe on top of my buy again priority lists.

So now for my next problem,  My original Mi Band, could not charge properly so I was unable to unpair it, when my original Mi Band 2 arrive,  so I know I may encounter some problems.  So I browse through the net and read some solutions and opinions.

This is what I did to pair my Mi Band 2 after losing the original
1.      l      Clear Data and Cache from  Settings > Installed Apps Mi Fit > Clear Data & Clear Cache
2.       Bluetooth to Forget Device, When to Bluetooth Setting > Bluetooth, then cannot figure out how to Forget Device
3.       Uninstall Mi Fit & Reinstall Mi Fit
4.       Relog in to Mi Fit
5.       When in to Mi Fit > Profile (Bottom Left) > Mi Band 2 > Unpair (Right at the Bottom)
6.       Successful !

Then I just proceed to Normal Pair the 2 Device
1.       Enter Mi Fit Apps
2.       Click Profile
3.       Click on Add Device
4.       Click on Band
5.       Follow instructions
a.       Make sure mi band is near phone
b.      When the Mi Band vibrate tap on it immediately while it vibrate
c.       That all then it up as how you like  (Next Post)

At least I manage to skip connecting to a PC as some web site say we have to connect our mi band 2 to a pc and pair,  “Quickly pair from Mi Fit app when the Mi Band Led Lights flash” which is what I did the first time around.

My next post will be on Mi Fit and the Mi Band 2 Setup
